Cosmic diamond
Astronomers have discovered a star 50 light-years from the Earth, in the constellation Centaurus, that is actually a solid diamond - a chunk of crystallised carbon measuring 4,000km across.
The star was once white dwarf, the hot core of a star that has used up all of its fuel and “died”. The white dwarf then crystallised, forming a huge diamond. Astronomers believe that our own Sun will become a white dwarf in about 5 billion years.
