Breakthrough for diabetics

Taiwanese scientists have made significant breakthroughs in the production on an insulin pill, which could one day enhance the lives of millions of diabetics.

Insulin is a substance in the body that regulates blood sugar. People with diabetes cannot produce enough of this chemical, and those with the most severe type of the disorder require daily insulin injections. The new breakthrough is a casing for the pill which prevents the insulin from being destroyed by acid in the stomach, which has so far been tested in rats.

Scientists and health professionals are excited by the developments, but warn that it will be some time before a safe and effective insulin pill is available for humans.
